David Jones is an Englishman who now lives in Florida, USA.
He has recently brought his DB2 to the Aston Workshop for restoration after discovering the car once belonged to Aston Martin owner David Brown and took a starring role in the 1954 film ‘The Devil on Horseback’.
“I recently decided to ship my Aston Martin DB2 back to the UK for a full restoration by Aston Workshop. I did a fair bit of internet research and decided they were the best Aston restoration team to get a really good job done on my car. The project actually started in early December of 2007 and should be finished around the end of 2008. I can’t wait to get the car back – it’s the perfect way to go to the golf course on Saturday morning!

Question:
What should I check to ensure my car passes its annual MoT?
Answer:
The key elements of the MoT cover Structural integrity, Suspension and Steering, Braking Systems, Engine emissions, (for vehicles manufactured before 1975) Lighting and indicators, Wipers/washers, Horn, Seats and safety belts, Windscreen, wheels and tyres.
Apart from engine emissions testing, the essentials of the test are common for all vehicles, though the tester must ensure that the assessment is against what was required of a vehicle at the time it was originally manufactured. One example of this was the need for brake lights which are not required for a pre 1920 vehicle. Another is that any car manufactured prior to 1965 did not require seat belts and if built in 1985 or later, must be fitted with rear seat belts if applicable. However, if they are fitted, then even though the belts were non-standard, they must still be fully serviceable.

Every month we will be speaking to one of the team at the Aston Workshop to give you an insight into the lives of the people who work with your cars. This month we speak to Bill Gardner, Machine shop engineer at Aston Workshop.
Q1. What is your job title?
Machine Shop Engineer.
Q2. Were did you work before Aston Workshop?
I worked for British Coal where I worked on a vast range of mechanical equipment, from twenty foot engines to tiny hydraulic control systems. This was a repair and trouble-shooting role, and we quite often had to manufacture parts for all types of machinery. This experience gave me a good insight into working on the older Aston cars and engines. (more) |
