Further Information
Aston Workshop are delighted to present for sale this exceptionally rare 1936 Aston Martin 2 Litre Speed Model, one of only 23 ever produced. Bodied in the highly desirable ‘Type A’ E Bertelli style (of which only 5 were ever made), and with true sporting pedigree in its history, this 2 Litre Speed Model is now offered representing an opportunity to own one of the finest cars Aston Martin produced in the pre-war period.
Having only ever had three owners from new, the car has been in our private collection for over two decades; upon arrival at Aston Workshop the car was subject to a sympathetic chassis-up restoration that utilised as many original parts as possible including the engine (both the block and the head), magnesium-cased gearbox, rear axle, body and wings. The original Ash frame was kept as original as possible with only the scuttle needing to be reskinned. The engine was fully rebuilt with a steel crank and forged rods and pistons, and was fully gas flowed and dynamometer tested before being placed back into the car. The original gearbox was also rebuilt with new bearings, while the suspension was overhauled with new springs. The interior of the car is original as found, with the leather showing a fantastic patina after years of enjoyment by its three previous owners, while the exterior was treated to a full respray utilising period-correct cellulose paint.
The 2 Litre Speed Models were built as homologation cars for Aston Martins entry into the 1936 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Following the last-minute cancellation of that race, the chassis were built and sold with one of three body types; the Type A body seen here is considered by many collectors as the most iconic. This car was originally sold to an RAF pilot and was entered into the 1936 RAC Rally where it finished 14th overall. Following the death of the first owner during the Second World War ownership transferred to a garage owner in Hungerford before Aston Workshop founder Bob Fountain purchased the car in the 1990s. Following the Astons restoration at Aston Workshop the car was used extensively as a competition car, in keeping with its racing origins. Entered into numerous rallies including the Flying Scotsman and the Patagonia 1000 Millas, this 2 Litre Speed Model has proved to be a reliable competitor with a lively and high-revving engine.
Eligible for historic events such as the Mille Miglia and the Flying Scotsman, this 1936 2 Litre Speed Model represents a rare opportunity to own one of the most important pre-war Aston Martins. Cared for by the Aston Workshop for over twenty years, and maintained to a competition-ready standard, this is truly a exceptional car of the kind that rarely comes up for sale.
