Twin-Circuit Girling Brakes

Fitment: DB4

The DB4 was released in 1958 as one of the most advanced grand tourers of the period, laying the foundations for the iconic DB5, DB6 and DBS, with disc braking used on all four corners of the car. One area where the DB4 could be improved however was the braking system which utilised a single hydraulic circuit for all four wheels, and Dunlop callipers all round. This system was completely overhauled with the release of the DB5 in 1963, with a new twin-circuit system providing hydraulic power to Girling calipers all round.

Aston Workshop are able to upgrade DB4s to utilise the twin-circuit Girling brake system as used in the DB5 onwards. Principally, the upgrade entails the fitment of an additional reservoir and DB5-specification master cylinder followed by an overhaul of the braking system to ensure that the new front and rear circuits are sound. Girling calipers are fitted, or if desired the twin-circuit enhancement can be utilised alongside an upgrade to one of our Big Brake options (click here).

The benefits of upgrading to the twin-circuit Girling system include:

  • Increased safety and reliability due to having two separate brake circuits; if one fails, the other will still be operational.
  • Improved reliability under heavy load, as Girling calipers use larger pads that dissipate heat better.
  • Increased stopping power due to the more powerful calipers and larger brake pads.
